Broad Learner OutcomesTo raise student awareness of the potential impact of drug and alcohol use on sexual decision-making and sexual health outcomes. To help youth realize what really happens, or can happen, - after the party -.
Introduction- The After Party: Sex, Drugs and Alcohol - was produced by Planned Parenthood Alberta as part of a province-wide safer sex campaign. The campaign was launched in February 2005 as the WONTGETWEIRD initiative. The campaign, geared to youth ages 15 to 19, promoted the web site www.wontgetweird.com as an access point to a network of sexual health information, education and care providers committed to providing youth-friendly, confidential, non-judgmental services.
This educational short film was produced in response to one of the four key areas of concern that was identified by youth who participated in focus groups that were part of the campaign planning process. That area of concern is the impact of drug and alcohol use on sexual decision-making and sexual health outcomes.
The primary aims of this short film are:- to help students identify the risks and possible consequences of combining drugs and/or alcohol with sexual activity
- to encourage students to think about the potential emotional and physical consequences they might experience with drug or alcohol influenced sexual activity
- to empower students to become proactive participants with regards to their personal sexual health and overall well-being by understanding how to determine and set their own sexual limits
The secondary aim is to have students become more objective viewers when watching media representations of sexual activity engaged in by youth. In addition to use in the sexuality education curriculum, ?The After Party? could also be used to generate a lively discussion in courses that include a media literacy component.
The men and women who tell their stories in ?The After Party? are not actors but real people who bravely agreed to share their personal, at times painful, real-life experiences. Our storytellers believe that their stories have something important to say to youth about how drugs and alcohol can impact sexual decision-making and result in consequences and outcomes that they may neither anticipate nor be prepared for.
