URGENT - CALL TO ACTION
Alberta Pro-Life has initiated another campaign to de-insure abortion services. And this time the Alberta government may be listening as they review reforms to the health care system. Premier Klein's has recently stated, "he expects taxpayer-funded abortions will come under scrutiny as reform moves forward".
But, don't for one moment, think this latest effort is about cutting costs. This is simply another tactic of the anti-choice community to take away our reproductive rights or at the very least, limit those rights to only women who have the financial means to obtain these services. Young women, rural women and women with limited income will be devastatingly affected once again.
WE MUST RAISE OUR VOICES TO BE HEARD ABOVE THE DIN OF COST-CUTTING KNIVES.
Contact your MLA, the Premier and Health Minister, Gary Mar and let them know loud and clear that YOU DO NOT SUPPORT ANY EFFORT TO DEINSURE ABORTION SERVICES. You can phone cost free using the government rite number 310-0000, or send a letter to your MLA, to Premier Klein at #307, 10800 - 97 Ave., Edmonton, Alta, T5K 2B6 and to Health Minister Gary Mar at #323, 10800 - 97 Ave., Edmonton, Alta. T5K 2B6.
PPA is working with pro-choice organizations in Calgary and Edmonton but we need your support both politically and financially to dedicate the time, energy and resources necessary to defeat this well-financed campaign of the anti-choice community. Please support your local pro-choice organization or if you would like to support PPA's work to ensure abortion services remain fully funded, send your donation to PPA and clearly indicate you would like your donation to go to "Save publicly funded abortion services".
Do you know who is teaching sexuality education in your schools? Are they qualified, skilled teachers?
Are they qualified, sexual health educators from an outside agency or your regional health region?
Are they teachers with support from an outside agency or the sexual health coordinator from your health region?
If teachers are using the services of an outside organization, does that organization promote an ‘abstinence only’ based program?
What is their source for statistics, information? Is it a reliable source - a government source or other?
What kind of sexuality education is being taught in your schools?Does the program follow Alberta’s Learning’s health and/or CALM curriculum?
Does the program offer students comprehensive, accurate information about birth control and sexually transmitted diseases?
Does the program offer opportunities to build skills around negotiating, decision making and peer pressure?
Does the program use scare tactics or exaggerate statistics (e.g. 80% condom failure rate)
- Phone your schools and ask: “who is teaching sexuality education” and “what are they teaching”
Volunteers Needed - PPA is actively recruiting volunteers for special events as well as for help in running the resource centre and/or office.
